The winter colds hit our house hard this year, and I was hit the hardest of us all, which means that cleaning my house took the back seat for about two whole weeks while I tried to recover, and a third while I was caring for our sick kiddos.
Needless to say while I was down and out, the shower scum had a chance to accumulate and cover our showers and tubs.
As embarrassing as it is, I’m going to share with you some ‘before’ pictures (DON’T JUDGE!) to show you just how scummy our master shower got, and how amazing this cleaner truly is!!! It’s cost effective, almost scrubbing-free, and did I mention that it is chemical free?
Seriously, it got pretty scummy huh. I can’t wait for you to see the after pictures! You are going to be amazed!
When our G got sick and her immune system was compromised, we couldn’t have any sickly germs around her, but we also couldn’t clean with any chemicals. So I had to learn quick how to clean our home without any chemicals with things that effectively killed the bad germs that could make her more sick, but were also effective and did the job without me spending hours scrubbing.
I searched Pinterest for bathroom cleaning ideas and came across a bunch of different ones. After trial and error, I blended a few ideas together, and came up with this combination that seems to do the trick on the nasty shower scum. I use it in our bathtubs and in our tiled master shower, and it works its magic on both materials. It really is magical, you’ve got to try it!!!
Here’s what you do.
Gather your ingredients:
1 cup baking soda
1/3 cup blue Dawn dish soap
1 cup vinegar (heated for 1 min in the microwave, I use a glass measuring cup)
Seriously, that’s it! Now here’s what you do.
Make sure to use a medium or large cleaning bucket. The mixture will foam up, and if you don’t use a bucket large enough, you’ll have a mess on your hands!
Heat the vinegar for 1 minute while you mix the baking soda and dish soap together in your bucket. Slowly add the vinegar, using a whisk to mix it together. It will foam up, just keep mixing! Once you’ve added all the vinegar, mix it well and let it sit until the foam goes down (about a minute).
Then generously lather your shower or tub with the mix.
That’s it! Let it sit for a few hours, I usually give it at least two, and then come back and scrub it with the shower scrubbing tool of your choice. (I use a magic eraser or scrubbing sponge.) Rinse and you are done!
Can you see it? Can you see the shine from the light!?! The scum is gone!!!
Here are some Before/After pics for a better comparison!
I started my shower cleaning chore at 9am by mixing the cleaning solution and scrubbing down the shower with it. While the cleaning solution sat and worked its magic I started this blog post, got in my 30min morning work out, printed coloring pages for our daughter, prepared and fed the kids lunch, and got our daughter ready for preschool. I went back and scrubbed a bit on the shower and washed it down and took these wonderful pics for you all to see! It’s now 11:26am and the shower is squeaky clean!!!
I don’t know about you, but that is the kind of cleaning I like to do!
